Vitiligo or white patches also knowns as a type of leukoderma is a cosmetically frustrating problem (does not have any systemic effects) which affects 1-3% of the population. Though not a serious life-threatening disorder, it has an impact on the person's social life and thus psychologically.

It is characterized by areas of hypopigmented or depigmented patches on the skin surface due to loss of melanocytes(melanin - producing cells).
